Abstract: A traffic-based nonlinear
power control algorithm is developed for the uplink of multimedia wideband code division
multiple access (CDMA) systems. By satisfying the requirements of average
signal-to-interference ratio and outage probability, the minimum power of each traffic
type received at base station is derived by iteration. As a result, the system capacity is
maximized and high quality of service (QoS) is guaranteed. The sim ulation of a system
involving three traffic types confirms the advantage of the algorithm and shows the trade-off between QoS requirement and system capacity.
