Abstract: Thin films made of conjugated polymers, such as poly diacetylenes, polyacetylene, polypyrrole, polyaniline, polythiphene and its derivatives, have third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities ranging from10-12 to 10-9They have also been observed to have third-order nonlinear optical coefficients that increase with the extend of the pi-electron delocalization and the polarizability of the molecule. Nanometer film and diluted solutionsamples of poly{(pyrrole2,5diyl)[p-nitrobenylidene]}(PPNB) were prepared and their nonlinear-properties were measured using z-scan technique. The mechanism of nonlinear absorption of PPNB pertains to two-photon absorption based on the incident energy and the absorption band. As a result of tropism and nanosizeffect, the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of the nanosize film was found to be two to three times as high as that of diluted solution.
