Abstract: Cylindrical ferro-silicon specimens are immersed into liquid iron. The melting or dissolution rate and temperature at the center are measured continuously. Identified are the period of iron shell and that of melting or dissolution. According to the observation and analysis, formation explanation is given to the conversion of ferro-silicon into the liquid iron state. Melting prevails when temperature of liquid iron is higher than 1330 degrees. A two-stage is observed when temperature of liquid iron is lower than 1300 degrees; it comprises of an initial reaction with liquid iron to form a mixture of liquid and solid and a subsequent dissolution behaviour.
