Abstract: According to the partial discharge location method based on UHF and ultrasonic phased receiving arrays theory proposed by the authors, a phased receiving ultrasonic planar array sensor which possesses 16¡Á16 elements is designed. With the aid of the phased array theory, the characteristics of the plane sensor are studied. The performance of each element measured in the laboratory is perfect within the frequency bandwidth of ultrasonic that can be received from PD in transformer oil. Location tests are conducted where one or two synchronous emitting piezoelectric ultrasonic sources in oil are simulated as PD sources. The results show that the locations are precise using this phased ultrasonic receiving array sensor, the system error is less than 2% near the positive normal, and multiple locations can be determined in one measurement.
