Research on Thermal Performance of Plate-Pin Fin Heat Sink

Abstract:A plate-pin fin heat sink (PPFHS) with circular pins staggered between parallel plate fins was proposed to improve air cooling for electronic devices.A primary function of the pins is disturbing airstreams passing through the heat sink. Numerical simulations were performed on turbulent flow and heat transfer in flow passages of a PPFHS and a plate fin heat sink (PFHS).The simulation results show that the average Nusselt number on the surface of the PPFHS is 30-50 percent higher than that of the PFHS at a fixed wind velocity, and the ratio of heat dissipation rate to pumping power for the PPFHS is about 20 percent higher than that for the PFHS under the condition of equal pumping power.Therefore,the PPFHS can get better cooling results than the PFHS under the same cooling conditions.
