Measurement of Gas Bubble Rising Velocity Using Infrared Emitting Diode and Photodiode Li Xiaoming,Feng Quanke,Bi Qincheng,Chen Tingkuan (School of Energy and Power Engineering,Xi'an Jiaotong Unviersity,Xi'an 710049,China) Abstract:Infrared emitting diode and photodiode was used as the measuring method of the rising velocity of air bubbles. And the rising velocities of air bubbles in de-ionized water,10% sodium chloride solution, 5% alcoholic solution, and 10% alcoholic-solution were measured with this method. It is found that the deviation of the test data by this method from the predicted values by relation of Mendelson and Harmathy is less than 15%, and the test data well agree with measured results by the digital camera. The-low-cost, easy-to-use and non-effect to liquid physical properties and undisturbed the rising of bubbles are the characteristics of this method. It is especially suitable for the bubble (slug) speed measurements in capillaries and so on. It is also a very good method in the study on heat transfer of capillaries and dynamics of microchannel gas-liquid flow.
