Flicker Index Method for Evaluating Flicker in Color Plasma Display Panel

Abstract:In order to reduce flicker in color plasma display panel (PDP), the highly peaked light output at certain situations and strong luminance difference among subfields that causes flicker in PDP was analyzed. Based on flicker theory and electroencephalograph response model for luminance, the flicker index method was developed to evaluate flicker in PDP. It was considered in the present method that flicker is mainly caused by the fundamental frequency component of luminance superimposed on the DCª²component of luminance. Therefore sum of square of the two components were computed respectively, and flicker index was the ratio between the positive square roots of the sums. The calculation results of flicker index indicate that increasing the number of subfields, symmetrical choice and homogeneous interlaced distribution of major weight subfields can reduce flicker effectively. Flicker can be optimized further by choosing the suitable subfield order according to gray scale region of image.
