Hierarchical Network Management

Abstract:Policy-based management is a relatively new development in the area of network management. A policy-based hierarchical management model is proposed, which employs the multi-level policy decision point£¨PDP£©to extend IETF policy architecture. Local PDP and cache are introduced in policy enforcement point £¨PEP£©, and PDP is also designed with cache. Moreover, the compiler and its backª²ends are implemented to translate the high level policy specifications into a variety of runtime representations. A policy is implemented in the runtime as an object which can be accessed from the domain service and distributed to the enforcement components automatically. Not only is the intelligence pushed into managed devices, but also the scalability and robustness of this system is promoted using the model.
