Abstract:A new method to generate tool paths for rough machining directly from measured data was proposed. The surface to be machined was approximated by a regular mesh of rectangular facets.Rough machining was performed slice-by-slice.On every cutting slice,a reference plane was used to intersect the surface model and rough.According to the positional relationships of intersection loops on cutting slice, all the feasible cut areas were determined. Then the desired tool paths were generated in a zig-zag manner and any gouging between the cutter and workpiece was detected and corrected automatically. The proposed algorithm is confirmed to be robust and effective. Particularly,it is suitable for machining sculptured surface with nested islands.
