Research on Preparation Techniques of Low Loss StepIndex
Polymer Optical Fiber

Abstract:The flow of preparing low loss stepindex polymer optical fiber (SI POF) is introduced. It was found that molecular weight of polymer and mechanics abilities of POF reduced when mass concentration of chain transfer agent increased. After adding modified monomers (ethyl acrylate or butyl acrylate), rlexility of POF was improved, but loss of POF was increased also. Influence of coating techniques on loss of POF was obvious. The sample of SI POF, whose loss was less than 200 dB/km (wavelength 650 nm), was prepared by rectifying raw material, modifying components and coextruding techniques.
