Abstract:Empirical numerical value of grounding resistance is often
used in secondary arc current calculation. The effects of grounding resistance on
secondary arc current are analysed by use of the Thevenin theorem. The method of secondary
arc extinction determines whether or not the grounding resistance needs to be modeled in
detail. The grounding resistance has little effect on secondary arc current in
transmission line with and without shunt compensation while it should be considered in
detail (the secondary arc may need to be included) in transmission line where high speed
grounding switches (HSGS) are used. It is also verified by the calculation of
electromagnetic transient program (EMTP).
