Abstract: A new mechano-chemical fatigue model for fiber-reinforced
composites was developed, and the cyclic activation energy and the factor of residual
strength were included in this residual strength-based model to reflect the effect of
chemical reaction caused by the mec
hanical activation when the composites are subjected to cyclic loads. Based on this model,
the reasons of many strange phenomena could be expressed easily, e.g.the fact that the
intermittent-fatigue-life is much longer than continuous-fatigue-life. The statistical
distribution of the residual strength is derived from this model and compared with
Schaff's model, Whitworth's model and the available experimental data, and good agreement
is observed between this prediction model and experimental results.
