Abstract: Utilizing parallelogrammic mechanismas basic structure, and adopting sliding friction as damping, a new type of multifunctional rolling pendulous vibration isolator was developed. The isolator serves the function of vibration isolation, wind protection and reposition. The mathematical model and control equations of the isolator is presented by the classical mechanics method. The numerical and experimental results show that if subjected to destructive earthquake, the acceleration of low structures installed the new isolators can be decreased by more than 80 percent. Comparison between the numerical and experimental results show that good agreement is obtained from these two different results. As the value of the spring striffness has a direct effect on the value of sliding friction force, optimization of spring stiffness is necessary to obtain the optimum vibration isolation effect. A computer code is developed, and the software can be used to guide the research and development of such rolling pendulous isolator.
